Back Pain: What’s Normal and How We Can Help

Back pain is very common. In fact, according to the World Health Organization, it’s one of the leading causes of functional limitation.
The reassuring news?
Most back pain is not serious and improves with the right approach.
Whether you sit at a desk, enjoy staying active as an older adult, or train regularly, back pain can affect anyone — but it’s usually very manageable!
What Causes Back Pain?
Most back pain is mechanical, meaning it relates to joints, muscles, discs and movement sensitivity.
Common triggers include:
Sitting for long periods
Sudden increases in training
Reduced strength or activity
Stress and poor sleep
Previous episodes
It’s rarely about “damage” — backs are strong and designed to move.
When Should I Be Concerned?
Back pain is rarely dangerous. However, seek urgent medical advice if you notice:
Loss of bladder or bowel control
Progressive leg weakness
Numbness around the groin
Unexplained weight loss
Fever with back pain
These are uncommon, but important to rule out.
What Actually Helps?
Staying active
Gradual strength training
Building confidence in movement
Understanding your pain
Organisations such as the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy promote exercise-based rehabilitation as the most effective long-term approach.
Rest alone is rarely the answer.
